Radon in a Rented Home: Testing and Landlord Responsibility

What is radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas from rocks and soils. Long-term exposure increases lung-cancer risk. It cannot be detected by human senses.
How should tenants check risk?
Start with the UKradon address search, then use an approved domestic measurement pack. Detectors are normally left in suitable rooms for around three months to estimate a yearly average.
What if the result is high?
Provide the report to the landlord and request specialist advice. Mitigation can involve underfloor ventilation, a radon sump or other property-specific measures. Do not select structural works without competent assessment.
Can the council help?
Radon is recognised within the housing-hazard regime. A local authority can assess risk and decide whether enforcement is appropriate. The measured level and occupants' circumstances will matter.
Can radon support a claim?
Potentially, but an affected-area map alone does not prove exposure or breach. Preserve accredited results, notice and mitigation history. Medical causation requires expert evidence; see medical evidence.
